Buckaboo Olive Egger Back Crosses

Back cross olive eggers add more unique shades to fill out your egg rainbow!

Hi Buckaboo friends! Your chicks or eggs can be reserved by ordering them online. I do not take waitlists, except for DNA tested silkies and satins, so if you’d like to adopt the bird or birds we’ve discussed please order them when I send you the link or at least within the day. I do my best to keep track of all the conversations I get to have with all my favorite chicken people, but my brain can’t quite remember them all. I also have hundreds of inquiries and many people changing their minds, so I don’t generally hold birds, unless you’ve paid for them. Once you’ve ordered online we can arrange a time for pick up!

You’re probably wondering what an olive egger back cross is! F1 olive eggers have 1 parent that has 2 copies of the blue egg gene, and 1 parent that has 2 copies of the brown egg gene. The offspring receive 1 copy of blue, and 1 copy of brown, which results in green eggs. To get an olive egger back cross we then breed the F1 olive egger to a mate that either has 2 copies of the blue egg gene (a blue back cross), or 2 copies of the brown egg gene (a brown back cross). The first generation of brown back cross babies have a 50% chance of laying brown and a 50% chance of laying dark olive. The first generation of blue back cross babies have a 50% chance of laying blue, and a 50% chance of laying olive. As you continue to cross them back to a dark brown or blue egg gene rooster these percentages change and the colors become more and more uniquely beautiful. The hens will lay a variety of shades of blue, olive, or brown. The blues tend to be brighter, the greens tend to be darker, and the browns tend to be rosy or taupe.

Buckaboo back cross hens are hatched from multiple generations of back crossing, and we really think you’ll enjoy the results! Our birds are a mix of black copper Marans, legbar, welsummer, silverrudds blue, and a couple other brown, blue, or green egg laying chickens. We’ve collected birds from amazing breeders all over the country! Current Buckaboo back cross olive eggers have a combination of genetics from Alchemist Farm, Sky Girl Farm, Sage Acres, Crosshatch Farm, and High Garden Chickens.  We breed for speckles and heavy bloom, as well! These birds can be grey, brown, black, white, or a combination of colors and patterns. Most of our brown back cross hens look almost exactly like black copper marans. If you already have blue, brown, and olive layers in your flock I highly recommend adding some back cross girls!

Eggs and chickens are counted as in stock if I believe they will be available within the next few weeks, but I’m sure you’ve all heard the phrase “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” right!? Well I can’t count my straight run chickens before they hatch, and I also can’t count my females for most breeds even after they hatch for at least a few weeks. I will do my best to fill orders asap, but need a bit of flexibility with timing! If a particular breed is not currently in stock you can ask to be added to the waitlist for hatching eggs or chicks up to the 4-8 weeks old age range. At this time we do not have waitlists for 9-15 week olds, or laying pullets, but please check back periodically to see if we have them in stock! Please let me know if you run into any problems with online ordering, and also feel free to reach out with any questions or requests. You can text or email Tiffany at 949-922-1373, or Tiffany@buckaboofarm.com. Local pickup is free, and shipping for eggs is $30/dozen. We do ship chicks up to 8 weeks old, as well. The cost for shipping live birds is $60 within CA, $75 within the continental US to cover postage and supplies.
