Buckaboo Sky Eggers (Blue and Minty Green Eggs)

Hi Buckaboo friends! Your chicks or eggs can be reserved by ordering them online. I do not take waitlists, except for DNA tested silkies and satins, so if you’d like to adopt the bird or birds we’ve discussed please order them when I send you the link or at least within the day. I do my best to keep track of all the conversations I get to have with all my favorite chicken people, but my brain can’t quite remember them all. I also have hundreds of inquiries and many people changing their minds, so I don’t generally hold birds, unless you’ve paid for them. Once you’ve ordered online we can arrange a time for pick up!

Buckaboo Sky Eggers will add beautiful shades of blue and minty green to your egg basket! They come from Chandler and Gunther the Opal Legbar Roosters’ pen, and those boys are both homozygous for the blue egg gene. Chandler and Gunther are in with some azure eggers from Alchemist Farm, as well as some beautiful opal legbar hens and other legbar mixes! Opal legbars and other babies with darker legbar coloring from this pen are autosexing, which means we can tell what gender they are at hatch. Others will be grey with barring and will take a few weeks for us to determine gender. You’ll notice the opal legbars cost a little bit more than the others. It’s because they are more rare and difficult to breed correctly (it has to do with the lavender gene that dilutes the color of the feathers).

PLEASE NOTE that we cannot guarantee exact egg color. Since these girls have azure egger mixed in sometimes they lay a minty green shade. Those ones usually have white speckles and heavy bloom, though, which turns out very pretty! See some examples of the greenish eggs with speckles and bloom below. Even some of the opal legbars have a chance of laying a minty green, instead of blue. We believe this is because opal coloring is fairly new for legbars, so some of the cream colored egg genetics are still showing up, which can shift the color of the egg from blue to green. Rest assured that as we continue to breed these beautiful birds we will select for truer blues. Meanwhile, the minty greens are truly gorgeous, as well! Our plan is to offer pure blue layers in years to come, but breeding plans with chickens can take a few generations and will be slightly different from year to year. This year our sky eggers will lay blue or minty green.

Buckaboo Farm offers Sky Egger Pullets (young females) for those of you who really only want to keep hens.  The price varies based on how old they are when you bring them home. Living in Southern California means there are lots of people and neighbors around, who do not want to listen to the song of the male chicken people, so we understand that most of our customers only want girls!  The younger pullets should not be put in a coop with older birds until they’re big enough to be safe with the full grown ladies.  We have lots more information on our Chicken Keepers Guide page, as well as Online Chicken Keeping Courses for those of you who want to become expert chicken tenders!

Eggs and chickens are counted as in stock if I believe they will be available within the next few weeks, but I’m sure you’ve all heard the phrase “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” right!? Well I can’t count my straight run chickens before they hatch, and I also can’t count my females for most breeds even after they hatch for at least a few weeks. I will do my best to fill orders asap, but need a bit of flexibility with timing! If a particular breed is not currently in stock you can ask to be added to the waitlist for hatching eggs or chicks up to the 4-8 weeks old age range. At this time we do not have waitlists for 9-15 week olds, or laying pullets, but please check back periodically to see if we have them in stock! Please let me know if you run into any problems with online ordering, and also feel free to reach out with any questions or requests. You can text or email Tiffany at 949-922-1373, or Tiffany@buckaboofarm.com. Local pickup is free, and shipping for eggs is $30/dozen. We do ship chicks, as well. The cost for shipping live birds within California is $60, and $75 within the continental US to cover postage and supplies.
