Crap Bag and Princess Consuela

Crap Bag and Princess Consuela are two of my babies that I adopted during the Southern California Newcastle outbreak. I happen to live in the one area of Southern California that did not have restrictions for the sale of chickens, but during that time I wasn’t able to order chicks online to be shipped, because they would have had to go through restricted areas in the mail. It was a rough couple of years for some of us crazy chicken ladies. When our local farm supply store had a bunch of straight run chicks I decided to give Miss Crap Bag and Miss Princess Consuela a home, even though they weren’t the breeds I’d been hoping for. It helped fill my need for baby chickens. When I chose these girls I thought they were both California White chickens, but Crap Bag turned out to be a third of the size of normal chickens. I believe she’s an Old English Bantam mix of some sort. In case you’re wondering, yes, these two got their names from a Friends episode!

Crap Bag is one hilarious little chicken. She’s super tiny, but super feisty! What she lacks in size she more than makes up for in personality and spunk. She LOVES to go broody, but really can’t hatch more than 4 full sized eggs at a time. It’s pretty funny watching her care for babies that become larger than her within only a few weeks. When Miss Bag feels there’s a threat to her babies I’ve actually heard her crow…yep, crow. Most chicken keepers do not recommend keeping bantams with full sized hens, but Crap Bag does just fine with the big girls! I actually don’t have a problem keeping smaller chickens with larger ones, and I think that’s because they have a lot of space to roam in the yard.

Princess Consuela Banana Hammock is super sweet and confident! She lays beautiful large eggs that are light brown, with white speckles. When I walk through the yard Princess is one of the first girls to come up to me and beg for treats. She’s a girl who knows what she wants!
