Gunther and Chandler the Opal Legbar Roosters’ Pen

This pen will give us hens that lay blue, green, turquoise, and olive eggs! Some will have speckles and heavy bloom, as well!

These 2 stud muffins are opal legbars. Chandler is a bit bigger than Gunther, but I couldn’t choose between them, because both are so sweet. I thought maybe I could choose one based on how many copies of the blue egg gene they carry, but after testing both have 2 copies of it! Aren’t they both beautiful? I just had to keep them both!!! Have you noticed that some blue and green egg layers have very little color saturation on their eggs? We’ve been selecting hens that lay vibrant shades of green and blue to be in the pen with Gunther and Chandler. I’m especially excited to see what colors we get by crossing the Silverudds Blue hen, Isabella, with the legbars (see below). The babies will lay beautiful eggs!

The girls in the pen with Gunther and Chandler include blue, brown, and olive eggers. The blue eggers are cream legbars from Rod Vilencia, and an azure egger from Alchemist Farm. The brown layers include welsummer hens and a black copper marans that lays a nice brown with a heavy bloom. The babies from the brown egg girls will be first generation olive eggers, which means they will inherit 1 blue egg gene and 1 brown egg gene from their parents. Genetically the first generation, or F1, olive eggers are supposed to always lay olive eggs. The olive eggers in the pen with Gunther and Chandler lay beautifully speckled, dark olive eggs, and some lay with heavy bloom. Since they will be back crossed with the blue egg gene boys their babies will lay unique shades of olive, green, or blue. We are so excited to offer you eggs and chicks from this pen!
